Head out for great fishing in Latvia’s fourth largest lake!
The best fishing in Lake Burtnieks is early in the morning or late in the evening. The lake is popular among pike spinners and zander trollers. However, over 20 different fish species live here – perch, eels, bream, roach, rudd, tench, crucian carp, silver carp, chub, ide, burbot, gudgeon, and others.
Older generation fishermen say that it used to be common to catch a 16 kg bream. In even earlier times, noblemen who owned all fishing rights used to send them as gifts to Russian and German emperors.
In 1997, the largest pike caught in Lake Burtnieks weighed 14 kg. Legends speak of Burtnieks’ legendary “Green Skirt” – considered Latvia’s record pike, said to be over 2 meters long. No one has caught it yet, only fought it. Maybe YOU will be lucky?
Burtnieks stretches 13.5 km in length, with a width of up to 5.5 km. The average depth is 2.4 m, max depth 4.3 m. 23 rivers flow into the lake, but only one flows out – the 95 km long Salaca River, which flows into the Gulf of Riga. The lake has three small islands totaling 1.4 ha, the largest being Enksāre and Cepurīte.
Since 2012, the lake has been managed by the Burtnieki municipality, with increased focus on ecological processes and human impact. Licensed fishing is organized in Lake Burtnieks.
